Bret Harte (1836–1902) was an American writer and poet best known for his short stories depicting the California Gold Rush and frontier life.
Born in Albany, New York, Harte moved to California, where he worked as a teacher, miner, and journalist. His breakthrough came with "The Luck of Roaring Camp" (1868), a story that captured the grit, humor, and humanity of Western pioneers.
Harte’s works, including "The Outcasts of Poker Flat", popularized the Western genre and influenced later writers like Mark Twain. Though his literary success faded later in life, he remains a key figure in American frontier fiction.
